BBC Writers Open Call

Run by BBC Writers (BBC Drama Commissioning)

Rather than taking scripts all year, the BBC reads unsolicited work in one annual window and uses it to find writers to develop, not projects to make. It suits UK and Irish residents with a finished drama or comedy-drama of 30 pages or more. Entry is free, and results can take six months.

Also asked for
One finished original drama or comedy-drama, for screen, radio or theater, aimed at adult or young adult audiences, sent as one PDF of up to 10MB and written in English. The form also asks for a logline and up to 250 words about your writing so far. Sitcoms, sketch shows, scripts under 30 pages, adaptations and AI-generated work are refused.

Need your pages in standard screenplay format first? The free screenplay formatter lays them out and saves a PDF.

What it gives besides money

Scripts are read in stages (first 10 pages, then 30, then in full) before the BBC Writers team reads a final group; shortlisted writers are interviewed for development groups such as Scripted, Voices and the Writers Access Group.
